We're all about taking pleasure in the daily rituals of caring for our skin and minds. To bring that story to life, we've started a photo series that documents the rituals of some of our real life muses.
Our first muse is the beautiful Maria Magdalena, a local illustrator who embodies our mantra of self-care, and shares our love of natural skin care. We visited Magdalena's home studio in Tamboerskloof to spend the morning with her while she went through her morning rituals
Thank you to Lindsay from Dearheart Photos for capturing this story.
What does self-care mean to you?
Self-care to me has become such an integral part of my daily routine. Over the years I have had to learn that you cannot take care of anyone else until you have tended to yourself first. Creating the time to pour love into my body, mind and soul is essential for me seeing as I work closely with multiple clients a day.
What beauty ritual do you like to indulge in?
My favourite beauty ritual is to run a hot bath after a long day with a few drops of my Calming Bath Oil, light some candles and apply my Purifying Mask and Polish. I can then read a bit or simply listen to some music. This ritual melts away the stress of the day.
What do you do to unwind?
Especially now that I am working from home for a bit I find it necessary to break away from work to unwind. I head to the mountains for a hike; use my Kayla Itsines app for a 28-minute work out or I follow a YouTube yoga tutorial. At least once a month I plan a weekend away to escape the busy city life and technology.
What does your beauty routine usually consist of?
My beauty routine consist of a quick face wash in the morning, a spritz of my Refreshing Tonic Mist and a coat of Mascara if I’m feeling ambitious. To add a pop of colour I adore wearing bright red lipstick. I apply a generous amount of Energizing Body Balm all over my body to give it that beautifully healthy glow. In the evenings I spend some time using my Balancing Cleansing Balm to wash the days build-up and make-up off, twice a week I use my Purifying Mask and Polish and finally I lightly dab my luxurious Purifying Treatment oil on my face. When I’m in bed already I use the Soothing Hand and Foot Balm while I sip on my Lavender and Chamomile tea.
Are you mindful of using natural products, and why?
Bless my incredible mother for teaching me about using natural products from an early age. My family was vegan for two years while I was growing up and my mother is a firm believer in all things natural (she has never, not once, dyed her hair and has only a handful of greys in her late fifties). I followed the GAPS diet earlier this year to remove all chemicals from my home, food and drinks and it was life changing. Considering the fact that your skin is your largest organ and soaks everything up like a sponge I believe natural products is vital for your skins overall health.
How has your attitude towards beauty changed over the years?
We are all somewhat invincible in our youth but over the years we become more mindful of the importance of our physical and mental health. I am a far cry away from the student who believed fast food was a decent meal and that exercising was dancing at a nightclub. I had my fun and I paid for it with bad skin, excess weight, insomnia and very dark circles under my eyes. Over the last five years I have spent a great deal of energy into changing my lifestyle and the results are visible even just through my skin. Being healthy and taking care of yourself is true beauty.
Do you have a favorite Lulu & Marula product, and why?
My favourite Lulu and Marua product is by far the Purifying Mask and Polish with the exquisite handmade Face Mask Brush and Bowl. Close second is the Balancing Cleansing Balm and Purifying Treatment Oil. The heavenly smells and the way it makes my skin feel is almost indescribable. You have to experience it to understand it for yourself.
